Summer Positions

Cabin Leader

If you’re looking for a position that gives you daily opportunities to impact lives and create the magic that makes overnight camp uniquely awesome, this is the position to start. You will work as part of a 65-member staff team from June to mid-August, leading a cabin of campers aged 7 to 17 through the day’s activities teaching skills, character and relationship building. Cabin Leaders will be trained in First Aid and CPR and will take part in either Ropes Course Facilitator Training or Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age or have completed the CIT program the prior summer and pass a criminal background check.

Day Camp Leader

Leading the Day Camp program every day requires someone who is passionate about affecting the lives of kids through lessons, adventures, encouragement and relationship building. Serving kids 6 to 13, Day Camp gives you the opportunity to work with a consistent group each day! Be someone’s super hero today! Day Camp Leaders will be trained in First Aid and CPR and will take part in either Ropes Course Facilitator Training or Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age or have completed the CIT program the prior summer and pass a criminal background check.

Program Team

Working as part of the program team at Y Camp means that you are facilitating, maintaining and organizing programs to ensure that all campers who partake in Summer Camp have the time of their lives. Positions included in the program department include Equestrian Coordinator, Aquatics Coordinator, Arts and Crafts Head, Challenge Course Coordinator, Assistant Wrangler, Program Assistant and more! Program Team members will be trained in First Aid and CPR. Applicants for Arts and Crafts Head, Challenge Course Coordinator, Assistant Wrangler and Program Assistant must be at least 18 years of age. Applicants for Equestrian or Aquatics Coordinator must be at least 21 years of age. All must pass a criminal background check.

Leadership Team

The Summer Camp program needs a lot of strong, confident, caring and passionate leadership; that’s where the Leadership Team comes in. Members of this team have larger responsibility and are focused on the logistical and organizational needs of camp. Positions include Cimber Coordinator, Staff Supervisor, Program Manager and Program Coordinator. Cimber Coordinators must be at least 19 years of age and all other Leadership Positions must be at least 21 years of age.  All Leadership Team members will be trained in First Aid and CPR must pass a criminal background check. 

Kitchen Staff

The Des Moines Y Camp hires a team that provides meals to the thousands of campers who attend camp each year. Most hours are focused in spring, summer and fall and it is part-time. The job is essential to the success of camp and the experience of the campers who attend. Staff will be trained in First Aid and CPR. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and pass a criminal background check.

Maintenance Staff

The camper experience is created by the environment in which it takes place and the Property Team is key to building the atmosphere of camp. From maintenance assistance to housekeeping, the work is a huge part of keeping camp clean and well-maintained. Positions exist for all seasons. Staff will be trained in First Aid and CPR. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and pass a criminal background check.

Office Staff

The Y Camp Office is the front line of Y Camp! Often the first interaction with parents and campers, the Office Team supports all departments and is instrumental in the success of camp! Staff will be working primarily with public relations, camper registration process, check-in programming at the beginning of each week, general organization, and data collection to ensure camp is running as smoothly as it can. Staff will be trained in First Aid and CPR. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and pass a criminal background check.


Fall & Spring Positions

Program Facilitator 

Program Facilitators are the key to Y Camp’s Groups, Retreats and Outdoor Education programs. The position provides programming to the diverse guests who attend camp throughout the year, from the challenge course to shooting sports and outdoor education classes, this is an opportunity to create an unforgettable experience for children and adults alike! It’s a part-time position that works occasional weekends. Facilitators will be trained in First Aid and CPR and will take part in either Ropes Course Facilitator Training or Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. Applicants must be at least 17 years of age and pass a criminal background check.
